A local welfare committee was formed in the late 1940s and from this modest beginning two important services for the elderly in Hassocks were created.

With the help of a mortgage from the District Council, Clevelands in Lodge Lane was purchased and opened in 1968 to provide seven flats with shared bathrooms, a Day Centre and as the operating base for Meals On Wheels.

A greater need for space culminated in the move to the purpose-built Age Concern Day Centre in Dale Avenue.

The Clevelands Committee added a modern wing to the rear of the attractive Victorian building which now provides eight self-contained flats and six studio flats for the elderly of Hassocks with the support of the Scheme Manager during weekdays plus the back up of a Centra Call Centre with call buttons located in every room when the Scheme Manager is not available.

Today, Clevelands still provides home for the active over 60s with local connections. The Committee are all volunteers who, together with the Scheme Manager run a secure and successful Sheltered Housing Scheme within the Local Housing Association system.
